One of many trips made on my CB900C, this one to Kansas.
In 1982 I had some interest in seeing some old friends from my service days (1967-1971). Stationed out in Topeka, Kansas at Forbes Air Force Base for two and haft years I made a number of both civilian and military acquaintances in the local area. So over the winter of 82-83 I started to make contact with them. I managed to locate a haft dozen or so of my old friends. The wife didn’t appreciate the phone bill but she did understand. We made plans for the end of June and into the Fourth of July weekend (the Fourth was on Monday that year). So the trip was set, leave Cincinnati 24 June get to Topeka 26 June and come home 5-7 July.
We were both looking forward to this trip. We had done 700 mile trips on the bike before, but not at such a leisure pace. We had always been in a rush to get there, mostly interstate riding; not very interesting scenery and not much fun. This time we were going to take the back roads. We were going to take US50 out of Cincinnati to Kansas City and state routes into Topeka. We were both excited about the trip, an opportunity to see the real US, not just the boring interstate highway system. First bump in the road; in early May we found out that my wife would not be able to go. Unfortunately both her work and family obligations interfered with the ride.
I had thoughts of canceling the trip, with no one to keep me company it was going to be a long ride, but my wife and friends from Kansas talked me out of it. So I started asking around if any one would be interested in riding out with me, not two-up riding but rather two or more bikes. I worked for a rather large company at the time and placed an ad in the company paper. Unbelievably I got three responses. One guy was headed to Lincoln, Nebraska, another to Jefferson City, Missouri and the third to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Only the Lincoln, Nebraska guys’ dates lined up and only for the ride out, he needed to start back 2 July. That’s the second bump in the road; the trip home would be a loner.
So the guy headed to Lincoln, Nebraska (let’s call him Jim) and I got together to do some trip planning. Jim and I were about the same age, 35 and rode somewhat similar bikes; both shaft drive, his was the Suzuki GS850G and mine the Honda CB900C. Again out US50 to Kansas City, with overnight stops in Salem, Illinois and Jefferson City, Missouri. From Kansas City Jim would pick up US73 North to get to Lincoln. Trip set, planning done, two weeks to go.
It was a long two weeks but finally it got there. Packed up, met Jim and hit the road by 8am. The first part of US50 is along the Ohio River, very scenic, but very short. Then as the river heads South US50 keeps going West into the rolling hills of Indiana. I had traveled across Indiana a number of times but always the interstate, I didn’t realize how pretty Indiana was. We were making good time and decided to take a small side trip into Hoosier National Forest. It was beautiful, very undisturbed and tranquil; it made me think of what the pioneers must have seen when they first entered this area. It was well worth the time. Got back on US50 again headed to Salem, pulled in about three o’clock that first afternoon. First day done, no bumps just great company and fantastic scenery.
The second day started out with the threat of rain; there were a lot of dark clouds overhead. We decide to ride about an hour before having breakfast and maybe it will blow by us. On the road twenty minutes and the skies cleared and the sun began to shine. Oh what a beautiful day. We rode on just east of St. Louis and stopped for breakfast. The restaurant was a little place, real Mom and Pop. We had a nice big breakfast of eggs, sausage and toast, can’t forget the coffee. The waitress struck up a conversation with us, asked us where we were from and where we were headed. You know, just being friendly.
The next thing we know two guys are coming over to our table. They introduce themselves and start talking of this nice road into Jefferson City. If two local guys are going to tell me a cool road to ride I’m going to listen. So the guys tell us to take state route 94 once we get into Missouri and it goes all the way in to Jefferson City. They said the road got a little snaky but you’ll love it. We get the map out to make sure we got it right. They gave us directions on how to get on 94 and we were set.
We picked up 94 and they were right the road was pretty twisty. We make several stops along the way. Wish I would have brought my camera. I would have loved to gotten some pictures of the small towns. You know those scenes you see in movies of the farm town with pickup trucks and the wagon full of hay? Well that’s what it was like. The favor of it was real. No false fronts, no chain stores, no fast food restaurants. Most towns only had one gas station. It looked, it felt, it smelled just like the small farm towns I imagined. Jim and I both agreed. It was wonderful. We pulled into Jefferson City a little before four that afternoon. It had been a good day riding.
Day three with about 160 miles still to go to Kansas City. Jim and I were on the road by 8am again. Three hours or so till we part. I have gotten to know Jim pretty well over the past few days, and I will miss him on the ride back. He’s a great guy to ride with; we have seen some outstanding sights. Little before noon we pulled up to the intersection of state routes 7 and 10, a place called Johnson, Kansas. We wasted about an hour and a haft having lunch and saying goodbye. Jim headed off north to pick up US73 and I headed west to Topeka.
It was only 50-60 miles to Topeka but it took me over two hours. It was Sunday so I gave Dale (one of my service buddies) a call. Got directions to his new house and buzzed over. Turned out that all my friends were there, they had been expecting me since 1pm (it was almost 3pm when I got in). It was so good to see all these people, it was quite a surprise. Everyone took off that Monday so we partied till late or should I say early in the morning, told stories and caught up with the years that had past. Called my wife to let her know that I gotten there OK. She knew and she also knew that all these people would be here when I got in. They had plans for me, going here to see that person and there to see this person. It was great.
